The micro controller provides the control signal to operate something such as a motor.  As you have said, the control signal does not have adequate current capability to drive your motor directly.  For this situation you will need a power amplifier which provides you with current gain to drive your motor.  There are a number of different power amplifier circuits, some using BJT transistors and some using MOSFet transistors.

With the BJT transistor, you will want to use a common collector circuit.  You will put your signal from your micro controller into the base of the transistor and put your motor in the emitter of the circuit where the output is.  With the MOSFet, your signal would go in on the base and out on the source.  In both circuits you would attain power gain which is also current gain.
