Is It Okay to be lied to by the police or those in charge?

Police and other law enforcement agencies routinely lie to suspects in the hope of extracting self incriminating information.  On the other hand, if you, Joe Public, lie to law enforcement agents you can be arrested for it.  Does this seem fair?  Should you be held to a higher standard than the police?  What do you think?
